Wendell, North Carolina retains small-town charm
and Southern grace while eyeing a bright future. Named
for the poet Oliver Wendell
Holmes, the town takes as
its motto his words: "The great thing in this
world is not so much where we are, but what direction
we are moving".
Situated fourteen miles east of the bustling city
of Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, Wendell
offers the peace and quiet of a tiny community, while
being minutes away from all the amenities and
opportunities of the city life.
Settlers discovered the beautiful forests and
meadows of Wendell early in the 1800's, but the town
was not incorporated until 1903. Tobacco reigned as
its chief industry through most of that century.
Today, as part of the Metropolitan Area of the
Raleigh-Durham and Chapel Hill Triangle, Wendell's
population of almost 4,300 (census 2000 statistics)
enjoys many different options for employment.
The mild southern climate, with an average annual
temperature of 59 degrees and a scant average snowfall
of 7 inches, gives Wendell's citizens much time to
enjoy their many recreational facilities. A
thirty-acre public park as well as an 18,000 square
foot Community Center keeps the residents busy, along
with many tennis courts, soccer, football and baseball
fields.
US Highway 64 runs directly through Wendell,
providing easy access to the major cities looming
around it. The Raleigh East
Airport, only four miles
away, serves the town as well as Wake
County. The
larger Raleigh Durham International Airport is a
twenty-five minute drive away.
Wendell's charming downtown area is home to the J.
Ashley Wall Town Square, which features a gazebo and
stage, and an outdoor garden. Many festivals are held
here throughout the year, including Arts in the Alley
Spring festival and the annual Harvest Festival and
Parade in October.
Wendell, North Carolina considers itself the
"Home of Progress and Opportunity". For
those seeking the quiet of small-town living, within
easy reach of the prosperity that cities offer,
Wendell certainly lives up to that title.
